To update the links at the top of the site, you will go to Content > Link Lists > edit the list called "Header Links"

You can add icons to the "icon font" field from the list http://fontawesome.io/3.2.1/icons/

You can add a background color using a hex code and use the "dark background" checkbox to flip the text to white if you want the item to be highlighted.
